'Pepper spray' release clears Pencader diners

5:16 p.m., Feb. 20, 2007--An unidentified person released what was believed to be pepper spray in the Pencader Dining Hall during the lunch period on Tuesday, forcing University of Delaware officials to clear the building.

There does not appear to be significant injury other than tearing eyes and allergic reaction, officials said, noting that the departments of Public Safety and Occupational Health and Safety responded to the scene immediately, and that Facilities provided increased ventilation to clear the air quickly.

The area was vacated 25 minutes early for the lunch period as a precautionary measure to customers and to protect their safety, according to Merlyn Bowen, marketing program manager for Dining Services.

Any student or customer who dined at Pencader Dining Hall between the hours of 12:45 p.m. through the end of the lunch period and was unable to complete his or her meal is asked to contact Dining Services for a refund via e-mail at [diningservices@udel.edu].
