Blue Hen softball team picked sixth in CAA

UD senior pitcher Carolynn Sloat

3:26 p.m., Feb. 8, 2007--The University of Delaware softball team has been picked to finish sixth in the Colonial Athletic Association in a preseason poll of the conference's eight head coaches.

Hofstra University is picked to win its sixth straight CAA championship, with six first place votes and 49 total points. Georgia State University was picked second with 39 points and James Madison University was picked third with 34 points, although the Dukes did receive two first place votes.

Following in the poll were the University of North Carolina Wilmington with 33 points, Towson University with 25, UD with 23, George Mason University with 12 and Drexel University with 10.

The Fightin' Blue Hens, led by Head Coach B.J. Ferguson, finished 33-24 overall in 2006. UD was 10-10 in the conference, good for fourth place, and reached the CAA championship tournament where the Hens fell 6-5 to Georgia State and 3-2 in extra innings to UNC Wilmington.

UD returns nine starters and welcomes seven newcomers for the 2007 season. Senior pitcher Carolynn Sloat, who earned second team All-Mid-Atlantic honors last season after going 19-16 with a 1.85 earned run average and leading the CAA in innings pitched, will lead the Hens. Junior second baseman Allison Borchers will pace the offense after earning first team All-CAA and All-Mid-Atlantic honors in 2006. Borchers led UD with a .382 batting average, 73 hits, 36 runs scored, seven triples and 105 total bases.

UD will open the season at home on Feb. 28 with a doubleheader against St. Joseph's University.
