Search under way for vice president for student life

9:52 a.m., Feb. 8, 2007--University President David P. Roselle has appointed a seven-member committee representing the campus community to assist in a nationwide search for a new vice president for student life. Since Roland M. Smith retired as vice president for student life in 2002, Roselle has been handling those responsibilities.

Havidán Rodríguez, vice provost for academic affairs and international programs, chairs the committee.

"We are seeking an enthusiastic and student-oriented individual, who will be able to build on the University's strong programs in student life," Roselle said. "The services and support we provide to our students play a very important role in their experiences here."

Provost Dan Rich said, "Our comprehensive student life program supports and reinforces the goals of the academic goals of the University. Many valuable aspects of a college education take place outside the confines of the classroom or the laboratory, and the new vice president will play a key role in further enriching the quality of student life and its contributions to academic excellence."

National advertising in The Chronicle of Higher Education and in a number of other academic and professional journals and listservs began this month. Letters requesting nominations also will be sent to university presidents and provosts throughout the country.

According to Rodríguez, the new vice president will play a vital role in continuing to build and expand on the important academic and student life initiatives that characterize UD. He said this also will be an opportunity to hire a person who will work with campus colleagues in promoting the growth and development of a campus culture that recognizes, encourage and expects the integration of academic initiatives with student life initiatives.

Rodríguez also said he hoped the University community will participate actively in this search process by seeking out and nominating strong candidates for the position. Members of the campus community with nominations or letters of interest for the position are encouraged to send them to Rodríguez at [havidan@udel.edu]. Nominations and expressions of interest will be held in confidence.

Candidates for the vice president for student life must have demonstrated strong interpersonal, communication and management skills, as well as proven leadership skills in a diversified university setting. Highly motivated and goal-oriented individuals with strong academic experiences, who are committed to quality student life, are encouraged to apply. The successful applicant for the vice president for student life will have a doctorate or other appropriate advanced degree, extensive higher education experience, and a significant record of successes in administration of a broad range of student life activities.

Candidates should submit a letter of interest, a detailed resume and the names and addresses of three references to Vice President for Student Life Search Committee, Office of Human Resources, University of Delaware, 413 Academy St., Newark, DE 19716. The review of applications will begin on March 1, although nominations and applications will be accepted until the position is filled. It is expected that the successful applicant will assume the post of vice president for student life by August.

Other members of the search committee are Bobby Gempesaw, dean of the Lerner College of Business and Economics; Kathryn Goldman, director of the Office of Judicial Affairs; Jonathan D. Lewis, senior psychologist in the Center for Counseling & Student Development; Wunyabari Maloba, associate professor of Black American studies, history and women's studies and assistant vice president for affirmative action and multicultural programs; Judith K. Morgan, doctoral student in clinical psychology; and Rose Overbey, a senior, majoring in psychology and English, and president of the Delaware Undergraduate Student Congress (DUSC).
