University competes in RecycleMania contest
4:18 p.m., Feb. 22, 2007--The University of Delaware is participating in the 2007 RecycleMania, a friendly competition among university students across the nation to recycle the most paper, cardboard, bottles and cans by April 7. UD and other universities are competing in different contests to see which institution can collect the largest amount of recyclables per capita, the largest amount of total recyclables, the least amount of trash per capita, or have the highest recycling rate. Schools report their progress on a weekly basis, with the results posted on the RecycleMania web site [www.recyclemania.org]. UD will be competing in the targeted materials competition, and will be measured on the amount of paper, corrugated cardboard and bottles and cans collected per capita. “We are pleased to be the first institution of higher education in the state of Delaware to enter this competition. Promoting recycling is certainly key to our overall sustainability platform,” Merlyn Bowen, director of marketing in Dining Services who is directing UD involvement in the project, said. At UD, RecycleMania is being sponsored by Dining Services, Residence Life, Facilities/Grounds and Custodial Services. As part of the UD effort, residence halls are being challenged to increase their recycling in a side competition on campus. “Many students recycled in their home communities and understand the importance of recycling,” Kathleen Kerr, director of Residence Life, said. “RecycleMania is a great way to get students excited about recycling here at UD.” Kerr said that Residence Life will provide a bit of friendly competition on the side by holding a contest to see which residential complex residents can increase the amount they recycle the most, per capita, by the time RecycleMania ends. “This will encourage all students, if they haven't already, to locate the recycling receptacles closest to their building. Studemts in the winning complex will have a tree planted on campus in their honor,” Kerr said. Students can track the progress of their residential complex by visiting the web site [www.udel.edu/reslife/students/recyclemania.htm]. Students also may visit the Dining Services web site [www.udel.edu/dining/recyclemania.html] for updates on the campuswide competition. "It's important for everyone to do their part in making the campus recycling program successful,” Roger Bowman, UD grounds manager in charge of campus recycling, said. “Be sure to place materials in the correct receptacles and to rinse out containers, because maintaining the cleanliness of the system for proper sorting allows us to recycle more." RecycleMania began in 2001 as a competition between Ohio University and Miami University of Ohio, and has grown tremendously each year since. This year, in addition to UD, participating universities include Villanova, Penn State, Temple, Drexel, Towson and Maryland. As part of RecycleMania, UD students are being asked to collect recyclables including paper, cardboard, bottles and cans. Items can be taken to the color-coded recycling bins located at Pearson Hall, the Rodney Complex, the Harrington Complex and the Laird Campus. In 2006, California State University San Marcos won the RecycleMania grant prize, with Oregon State University the winner of the per capita classic. Other category winners included Harvard University, Middlebury College and the Rhode Island School of Design. RecyleMania is endorsed by the Environmental Protection Agency's WasteWise Program, the National Recycling Coalition's College and University Recycling Council, and the National Wildlife Federation's Campus Ecology Program. |
