Cello-piano duo in concert Feb. 23 at Mitchell Hall

Cellist David Finckel and pianist Wu Han

5:47 p.m., Feb. 21, 2007--“Live from the Lincoln Center,” the third Master Players Chamber Series concert this season, presented by UD's Department of Music, will take place at 8 p.m., Friday, Feb. 23, in Mitchell Hall. The concert will feature a duo performance by cellist David Finckel and pianist Wu Han.
The highly acclaimed Masters Players Chamber Series, now in its third season under the artistic direction of Xiang Gao, internationally renowned UD faculty violinist, has brought some of the world's best classical musicians to campus.

Finckel and Han's repertoire spans virtually the entire literature for cello and piano, with an equal emphasis on the classics and the contemporaries. Their 20th-century repertoire includes works ranging from Prokofiev and Britten to Alfred Schnittke and André Previn, and their recitals feature a growing number of works written specifically for them by distinguished composers, including Bruce Adolphe and Augusta Read Thomas.

The duo has performed in some of the most prestigious venues and concert series across the United States, including Boston's Gardner Museum, Stanford Lively Arts, New York's 92nd Street Y and Washington's Kennedy Center. The duo also has toured Mexico, Canada, the Far East, Scandinavia and continental Europe to critical acclaim. Highlights from recent seasons include their debuts in Germany and at Finland's Kuhmo Festival, as well as their presentation of the complete Beethoven cycle in Tokyo, and their signature all-Russian program at London's Wigmore Hall.

Finckel and Han have been featured in many publications including The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Los Angeles Times and the San Francisco Chronicle and have appeared on NBC Nightly News, A&E Breakfast with the Arts, CNN's Turner Entertainment Report and European Business News.

In recent years, Finckel and Han have become widely recognized for their initiatives in expanding audiences for classical music, and for guiding the careers of young musicians. In August 2003, the duo launched Music@Menlo, a new chamber music festival in California's Silicon Valley that has attracted widespread attention and international acclaim for its innovative programming, roster of world-class artists, workshop program for top young chamber ensembles, Encounters series featuring the nation's top musicologists and a strong visual arts component. The duo also launched ArtistLed, the first musician-directed and Internet-based recording company. All seven ArtistLed recordings, including their release of The Complete Works of Beethoven for Cello and Piano, have received critical acclaim. The next ArtistLed recording, Russian Classics, featuring works by Rachmaninov, Prokofiev, and Shostakovich, received BBC Music Magazine's coveted “Editor's Choice” designation.

Finckel and Han served for three seasons as artistic directors of SummerFest La Jolla, establishing that venue as one of the nation's leading summer music destinations. In June 2004, Finckel and Han were named artistic directors of The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and are regularly featured at the country's leading music festivals. Recent highlights include performances at the Aspen Music Festival, Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival and Chamber Music Northwest, where they performed all five Beethoven sonatas in a single, sold-out marathon event. They also have served as regular faculty members of the Isaac Stern Chamber Music Encounters at Carnegie Hall and at the Jerusalem Music Center and continue to appear annually on the Aspen Music Festival's Distinguished Artist Master Class series and in various educational outreach programs across the country.

Concert admission is $17 for the general public, $12 for senior citizens, UD faculty, staff and alumni, and $5 for children and students with ID. Tickets may be available at the door, but purchasing tickets in advance is strongly recommended. Tickets are available at the Trabant University Center and Bob Carpenter Center box offices. Call (302) 831-4012 for box office locations and hours.

In addition, there will be a master class free and open to the public at 10 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 24, in the Gore Recital Hall of the Center for the Arts.
