Computer updates needed for early arrival of Daylight Saving Time 12:31 p.m., Feb. 22, 2007--As a result of the U.S. Energy Policy Act of 2005, daylight saving time (DST) will be extended by four weeks beginning this year: DST will begin at 2 a.m., Sunday, March 11, and end at 2 a.m., Sunday, Nov. 4. This change will affect computer operating systems and applications that use dates and time. To deal with the DST change, many vendors have released patches or upgrades for their products. Employees who have a departmental CITA should check with that individual before installing any computer patches or upgrades. Turn on Windows Automatic Updates Information Technologies (IT) strongly recommends that Windows XP users set their computer to receive Windows Automatic Updates. When you turn on Automatic Updates, you will be notified automatically when Microsoft releases a critical or important update or patch for one of its products. To turn on Automatic Updates, follow the instructions on the IT Help Center's web site at [www.udel.edu/topics/windowsxp/XPupdate.html#auto].
Windows XP (Service Pack 2) Windows XP (SP2) users should install the “February 2007 cumulative time zone update for Microsoft Windows operating systems” patch, which can be found at [http://support.microsoft.com/kb/931836]. Windows XP (Service Pack 1) Microsoft no longer supports Windows XP (SP1). Windows XP (SP1) users should upgrade to SP2 before applying the DST patch. You can upgrade to SP2 for free at [www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/default.mspx]. After you upgrade to SP2, install the DST patch, which can be found at [http://support.microsoft.com/kb/931836]. If you do not upgrade to SP2, you will need to manually change your computer's time before the new DST dates take effect. Microsoft Outlook 2000, 2002 and 2003 Outlook 2000, 2002 and 2003 users should install the “Time Zone Data Update Tool for Microsoft Office Outlook” patch, which can be found at [http://support.microsoft.com/kb/931667]. Note: Outlook Express will be updated automatically by installing the Windows operating system patch, which can be found at [http://support.microsoft.com/kb/931836]. Windows 2000 Microsoft no longer supports Windows 2000. However, you can find a DST remedy for this operating system at [http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21253837]. You will need to scroll down the page until you reach the section entitled, “Windows 2000.” Follow the instructions on the screen. Windows ME, 95 and 98 Microsoft no longer supports these operating systems any longer. However, if you are still using one of them, refer to Microsoft's “Determining the impact of daylight saving time 2007 on your home computer,” which can be found at [http://support.microsoft.com/gp/dst_homeuser#affected]. As outlined on this web site, you will need to manually set the clock on your computer twice a year: Once before to March 11 and again before Nov. 4. To manually set your computer's clock, follow these steps:
