UD men’s lacrosse team overwhelms St. Joe’s

Marty Kupprion scored four goals in the victory over St. Joseph’s.

9:27 a.m., Feb. 12, 2007--Looking very much like a team deserving of a national ranking, the University of Delaware men's lacrosse team overwhelmed St. Joseph's University 23-6 on Saturday afternoon at chilly Rullo Stadium.

The Fightin' Blue Hens, a consensus top 20 team in preseason polls, jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the second quarter and went on to its highest goal total since a 23-11 victory over Harford University in 2000. The 23 goals was also the highest total scored on opening day in UD history, surpassing a 22-7 win over St. John's University in 1991.

The Hens, selected the preseason favorite to capture the Colonial Athletic Association championship, scored at least five goals in each quarter, out shot St. Joseph's by a commanding 62-15 margin and won 26 of 32 face-offs.

Attack Adam Zuder-Havens opened the scoring for the Hens, and Marty Kupprion and Dan Deckelbaum scored four goals each. Vincent Giordano had three goals, Chris Hichborn had two goals, and Beau Davis, Nick LoManto and Jordan Hall each had multiple-point games. All-America senior Alex Smith, who has led the NCAA in face-off winning percentage each of the past two seasons, won 26 of 29 attempts and picked up 21 ground balls.

The Hens will return to action against Lehigh University at 1 p.m., Saturday, at Rullo Stadium. Lehigh went 8-7 in 2006 and has qualified for the Patriot League championship tournament each of the last two seasons. The Mountain Hawks return four of their top six goal scorers, including two-time All-Patriot selection Alec Hooff.

UD will remain at home for games against Manhattan University at 1 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 24, and against Rutgers University at 1 p.m., Saturday, March 3.
