Hens men’s basketball falls at UNC Wilmington

UD freshman Brian Johnson had 26 points in the loss to UNC Wilmington.

8:13 a.m., Feb. 26, 2007--The University of Delaware men's basketball team fell 77-65 to the host University of North Carolina Wilmington in a Colonial Athletic Association game played Saturday afternoon.

“I was very happy with our first half performance,” UD Head Coach Monté Ross, whose team trailed just 32-28 at the break, said. “But the stretch to start the second half put us in a hole and we couldn't get out of it. UNC Wilmington made some big shots when we went into a zone so my hat goes off to them. They did a great job of clogging the lane and we didn't make some smart decisions when we penetrated.”

The Hens got 26 points from freshman point guard Brian Johnson. Junior forward Herb Courtney had 16 points, Sam McMahon had 14 and Henry Olawoye had eight points and eight rebounds.

The game was the regular season finale for the Fightin' Blue Hens, who closed a difficult campaign at 5-25 overall and 3-15 in the CAA. UD will prepare for the conference championship tournament, to be played March 2-5 at the Richmond (Va.) Coliseum. As the bottom seed, the Hens will face No. 5 seed Northeastern University in a game at 2:30 p.m., Friday.
