George Mason defeats UD in men’s basketball

UD junior forward Herb Courtney had 19 points and 10 rebounds in the loss to George Mason.

8:31 a.m., Feb. 15, 2007--Cold shooting cost the University of Delaware men's basketball team as the Fightin' Blue Hens lost 66-46 to George Mason University in a Colonial Athletic Association game played Wednesday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.

The Hens shot just 31.4 percent from the field, and hit just four of 23 three-point attempts, as they fell to 5-22 overall and 3-13 in the conference.

“This was one of those nights when our shots wouldn't go in and we let that affect us on the defensive end,” UD Head Coach Monté Ross said. “George Mason's fastbreak lay-ups at the end of the first half really hurt us. They are good inside and outside and they have quality depth.”

The Hens kept the game close through the first nine minutes of the first half but George Mason, which reached the NCAA Final Four in 2006, pulled away to a 30-20 halftime lead and opened the second half with a 15-4 run.

UD junior forward Herb Courtney had 19 points and 10 rebounds and Sam McMahon had 16 points and five assists. Henry Olawoye had eight rebounds and freshman point guard Brian Johnson had six assists.

The Hens will remain at home for an ESPNU BracketBusters game against Iona College at 7 p.m., Saturday, at the Bob Carpenter Center. The Gaels are 1-24.

They will then close the season with a pair of CAA games, taking on Northeastern University at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 21, at home and traveling to the University of North Carolina Wilmington on Saturday, Feb. 24.

The conference tournament will open Friday, March 2, at the Richmond (Va.) Coliseum.
