Hen men’s basketball defeats UNC Wilmington

UD’s Sam McMahon scored 26 points, a career high, in the victory over UNC Wilmington.

8:14 a.m., Feb. 8, 2007--The University of Delaware men's basketball team led from wire to wire to defeat the University of North Carolina Wilmington 78-69 in a Colonial Athletic Association contest played Wednesday night before 3,027 fans at the Bob Carpenter Center.

The resilient Fightin' Blue Hens overcame another setback in the loss of senior guard Calvin Cannon, who was declared academically ineligible shortly before the game. That loss left UD with just seven total players.

“A couple of guys took advantage of a great opportunity tonight,” UD Head Coach Monté Ross said. “It was a great team win. Everyone contributed across the board. We have the attitude that we are just going to do the best we can with what we have.”

Two players who took advantage were Sam McMahon, who scored a career high 26 points, including four three-point baskets, and forward Henry Olawoye, who had 12 points and eight rebounds, both career highs. Also for the Hens, freshman point guard Brian Johnson had 14 points and six assists and junior forward Herb Courtney had 13 points and six rebounds.

UD jumped out to an early 9-0 lead, held a 35-31 lead at the half and held off a late UNC Wilmington rally.

With the victory, UD improved to 5-20 overall and 3-11 in the CAA. The Hens will play at Drexel University at 4 p.m., Saturday, before returning home to face 2006 NCAA Final Four competitor George Mason University at 7 p.m., Wednesday. Drexel is 17-6 overall and 9-4 in the conference while George Mason is 13-10 overall and 7-6 in the conference.

There is a possibility Cannon's academic situation can be resolved in the near future.
