Hen men’s basketball rallies but falls to Dukes

UD’s Calvin Cannon scored 21 points in the loss to James Madison.

8:28 a.m., Feb. 5, 2007--Down 18 points early in the second half, the University of Delaware men's basketball team staged a furious rally but came up just short in a 69-64 loss to James Madison University in a Colonial Athletic Association game played Saturday afternoon at the Bob Carpenter Center.

The Fightin' Blue Hens cut the James Madison lead to one point at 65-64 with 12 seconds left but were unable to overcome that final hurdle.

“Our margin of error is too slim for us to dig ourselves that big of a hole,” UD Head Coach Monté Ross said. “When you turn the ball over and it leads to lay-ups, it is really deflating. Our intensity level to start the game was fine, but our intelligence on offense was lacking.”

Senior guard Calvin Cannon led the Hens with 21 points and junior forward Herb Courtney had 20 points and nine rebounds, although he was limited by foul trouble and eventually did foul out late in the game. Junior forward Sam McMahon had 12 points.

With the loss, UD fell to 4-20 overall and 2-11 in the CAA. They will remain at home for a game against the University of North Carolina Wilmington at 7 p.m., Wednesday, at the Bob Carpenter Center.

The Hens will then take to the road for a game at Drexel University at 4 p.m., Saturday, before returning home for an ESPNU Bracket Busters game against Iona University on Saturday, Feb. 17.
