George Mason defeats UD in men’s basketball

UD freshman guard Darrell Johnson had 11 points in the loss at George Mason.

8:34 a.m., Feb. 1, 2007--Hot-shooting George Mason University routed the University of Delaware 89-59 in a Colonial Athletic Association game played Wednesday night in Fairfax, Va.

George Mason, which reached the NCAA Final Four last season, broke away from the Fightin' Blue Hens early in the first half and took a 44-27 lead into halftime. The Patriots shot 63 percent from the field and sank nine three-point baskets.

For the Hens, junior forward Herb Courtney had 16 points and nine rebounds, Sam McMahon had 14 points and freshman Darrell Johnson had 11 points.

“The biggest thing was that I didn't put our team in a position to win tonight,” UD Head Coach Monté Ross said. “I saw how difficult this game would be and I didn't prepare them well enough. I take full responsibility. George Mason put us in a difficult position because we couldn't guard them down low and they were making their shots from the outside. It's a difficult thing. We have to make sure this doesn't happen again. We'll be better prepared next time out.”

With the loss, the Hens, who had scored a major upset in a victory over Hofstra University on Monday night, fell to 4-18 overall and 2-10 in the CAA. They will attempt to rebound with a home game at noon, Saturday, against James Madison University at the Bob Carpenter Center. UD will remain at home for a game against the University of North Carolina Wilmington at 7 p.m., Wednesday.

James Madison is 6-16 overall and 6-16 in the CAA and UNC Wilmington is 5-16 overall and, like the Hens, 2-10 in the conference.

In other CAA action Wednesday, Hofstra bounced back from the upset at the hands of the Hens to defeat conference front-runner Virginia Commonwealth University 79-68. Virginia Commonwealth leads the conference with an 11-1 mark while Hofstra is in second at 10-2. Drexel and Old Dominion universities are tied for third at 8-3, with George Mason at 7-5.
