LGBTQ spring lecture series set

11:17 a.m., Feb. 12, 2007--UD's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning (LGBTQ) spring lecture series begins Tuesday, Feb. 13, and ends Tuesday, May 8.

All lectures are free and open to the public and will be held at 12:30 p.m. in 318 Gore Hall (except for Tuesday, March 6, which will be at 8 p.m., location to be announced).

On Tuesday, Feb. 13, Julie Wilgen assistant professor of Women's Studies and individual and family studies, will lecture on “Gender and Dating through a Historical Lens.”

Other lectures slated for the series include:

  • “Sisters, Friends, and One Imperious Mistress: The Metaphors of Marrige and the Sexing of the Family,” by Claire Rasmussen, assistant professor of Women's Studies and political science and international relations, Tuesday, Feb. 20;
  • “The Emergence of Homosexual Identity in 18th Century Europe,” by Matt Kinservik, associate professor of English, Thursday, March 1;
  • “Kate Bornstein is a Queer and Pleasant Danger,” by Kate Bornstein, playwright, artist and author, 8 p.m., Tuesday, March 6, location to be announced;
  • “The Bible and Homosexuality,” by the Rev. Brad Hinton, associate rector of the Trinity Parish in Wilmington, Tuesday, March 13;
  • “Queer Music,” by Larry Peterson, professor of music, Thursday, April 5;
  • “Being a Gay Artist,” by Hilton Brown, Harriet T. Baily professor of Museum Studies and Art History, Thursday, April 19;
  • “Sex, Facism and Weill's Seven Deadly Sins,” by Megan Jenkins, director of development at the City University of New York (CUNY) Center for Lesbian and Gay Studies,, Thursday, April 26;
  • “Alternate Channels: LGBT Images on U.S. Television: 1950s,” by Steven Capsuto, author of Alternate Channels, Tuesday, May 1; and
  • “Androgynes, Prostitutes and Lesbians: Women, Nature and Pleasure in Renaissance France,” by Gary Ferguson, professor of foreign languages and literatures, Tuesday, May 8.

The series is sponsored by the Women's Studies minor in Sexualities and Gender, the Women's Studies Program, the College of Arts and Sciences and Lloyd Thoms Jr. and Phillip Cross.
