Wellness Center offers heart healthy programs

10:15 a.m., Feb. 2, 2007--The UD Wellness Center is marking National Heart Month by encouraging employees to register for one of its upcoming programs during February.

Heart disease is the leading killer of Americans over 65. According to the American Heart Association, individuals can lower their risk and improve their quality of life by making healthy lifestyle choices.

“Employees make small choices every day about eating and physical activity habits and how they manage their stress,” Linda Smith, UD Wellness coordinator, said. “Our goal is to support them in choosing healthy habits as part of their daily routine.”

Three heart healthy programs are scheduled for February.

Healthy hearts for busy people

Can't get away to a screening or a lecture? Looking for some up-to-date information about heart health? Register for this mail program and receive three weekly packets chock full of great tips and information on stress management, diet and exercise tips for a healthy heart and information about heart disease prevention.

This program costs 10 Wellness Dollars, and registrations are due by Friday, Feb. 9. Packets will be mailed out on Mondays beginning Feb 12. For information and to register, visit [www.udel.edu/wellness/heart%20mail07.htm].

Multi-screening for cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar

This program combines three popular health screenings by offering blood pressure, blood cholesterol and blood sugar reports in one package. Participants get readings on the three health indicators within a 10-minute period. Fasting is not required, but participants should not eat for one hour before the screening. Pre-register for this service by calling (302) 831-8388. Online registration not available for this screening.

Multi-screening appointments will be scheduled from 10 a.m.-1 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 20, in room 206 of the Trabant University Center. Cost is $15 Wellness Dollars, plus a $5 copayment. For more information, go to [www.udel.edu/wellness/Screenings/multi.htm].
