Aylward, Gordon named UD golf team coaches

Patrick Aylward has joined the UD golf coaching staff.

8:15 a.m., Feb. 7, 2007--The University of Delaware has announced the addition of Patrick Aylward and local teaching professional Matthew Gordon to the golf team coaching staff.

Aylward, who served as head coach at NCAA Division III Marymount University in Arlington, Va., for seven years, will serve as top assistant to UD Head Coach Mike Keogh, while Gordon will serve in a volunteer role. Aylward replaces Don Thompson, who retired following three seasons as an assistant with the Fightin' Blue Hens.

A native of Highland Falls, N.Y., Aylward earned a bachelor's degree in health and fitness management at Marymount in 1996 following an outstanding four-year playing career. He was a captain for two seasons and helped the team set a school record for all-time low team score in 1996.

Aylward served as a volunteer assistant coach at Marymount in 1997 and 1998 before becoming head coach at his alma mater in 1999. He left with the most victories in school history, and his golfers set six records for lowest match score during his tenure.

Gordon will serve as a volunteer instructor working out of Chisel Creek Golf Club in Landenberg, Pa., where the Hens frequently practice. He is a Class A golf professional, serving as director of golf operations at Chisel Creek and also operating a golf school at the club.

Gordon, who attended UD, began his teaching career as an assistant golf professional at Hartefeld National Golf Club in Avondale, Pa., before moving to Chisel Creek. He was elected a member of the Professional Golfers Association in 2000 and was selected one of the nation's top golf instructors by the Consumer Research Council of America in 2004.

UD will begin the spring season at the Fairfield Spring Invitational March 16-17 at Heather's Run Golf Club in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Colonial Athletic Association championships will be held April 20-22 at The Homestead in Hot Springs, Va.
