UD Figure Skating Team takes second on East Coast

5:20 p.m., Feb. 27, 2007--UD's figure skating team placed second out of 17 schools from the East Coast in the Boston University Open held Feb. 10-11.

Many of the skaters scored points for the team by placing in the top five in their respective events, including:

  • Emma Phibbs, junior, 1st, pre-A dance;
  • Alysen Stryker, junior, 3rd, gold dance;
  • Carmeline Panico, sophomore, 1st, gold dance group A;
  • Andrea Varraux, junior, 1st, gold dance group B;
  • Leah Ciekot, freshman, 3rd, preliminary B freestyle;
  • Naomi Nishio, junior, 1st, preliminary B freestyle;
  • Katie Royce, junior, 4th, novice short program;
  • Adena Neglia, sophomore, 1st, novice long program;
  • Mallory Houghton, sophomore, 2nd, novice freestyle;
  • Jazmyn Manzouri, freshman, 1st, junior short program;
  • Angie Goldman, sophomore, 5th, junior short program;
  • Laura Stefanik, junior, 1st, junior long program;
  • Kim Holzthum, sophomore, 3rd, junior long program; 2nd, pre-B dance;
  • Melissa Pearl, freshman, 5th, senior short program;
  • Kaitlyn DeRoy, senior, 3rd, senior short program; 4th, senior long program;
  • Kandis Kovalsky, junior, 1st, senior long program; and
  • Annie Kowtoniuk, senior, 2nd, senior long program;

High team maneuvers included 1st place by:

  • Laura Stefanik, junior;
  • Kandis Kovalsky, junior;
  • Melissa Pearl, freshman;
  • Kaitlyn DeRoy, senior;
  • Emma Phibbs, junior; and
  • Jazmyn Manzouri, freshman.

Medium team maneuvers included 1st place by:

  • Adena Neglia, sophomore;
  • Katie Royce, junior;
  • Mandy Romag, sophomore;
  • Lauren Asprooth, sophomore; and
  • Mallory Houghton, sophomore.

Low team maneuvers included 2nd place by:

  • Lily Jaffie-Shupe, sophomore;
  • Naomi Nishio, junior;
  • Leanna Laor, freshman; and
  • Leah Ciekot, freshman.

The UD Skating Team will host a home competition on March 4, at the Fred Rust and Gold Ice Arenas. A placement in the top three will qualify the team for intercollegiate Nationals, to be held at Dartmouth College on April 17.
