Drumming workshop slated for Saturday

3:53 p.m., Feb. 6, 2007--UD's Department of Music presents a drumming workshop for teachers at 9 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 10, in the Amy E. du Pont Music Building.

Participants in this workshop will get hands-on experience using drums to teach rhythmic concepts and build classroom unity. Activities will range from rhythmic games for younger students to percussion ensemble pieces for older grades. Speech, poetry, children's literature, movement improvisation and song will be integrated into the drumming circle. The Salisbury Orff and Drum Ensemble will be present to demonstrate and work with participants.

Workshop leader Julia Swanson teaches kindergarten through fifth grade music classes in the Pequea Valley School District in Lancaster County. She holds Level III certifications in both Orff Schulwerk and Kodaly. In 2005, Swanson was honored as one of the 12 finalists for the Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year. Outside of school, Swanson sings in the Chancel Choir of Wilmington's First & Central Presbyterian Church, where she founded and conducts an Orff Schulwerk children's music program.

Participants are asked to bring a tubano drum or djembe to the
workshop. Admission is free. For more information, call (302) 831-2577.
