Redding diversity award nominations invited

4:40 p.m., Feb. 27, 2007--UD's Commission to Promote Racial and Cultural Diversity is receiving nominations for the Louis Lorenzo Redding Diversity Award, which recognizes the promotion, enhancement and implementation of diversity by individuals, units, departments or organizations within the University community.

Nominations will be accepted until Friday, March 9. The award, a plaque given to the recipient and $1,000 donation to the Morris Library in honor of the recipient, will be presented at the Louis L. Redding Lecture, from 4-7 p.m., Thursday, March 15, in the Trabant University Center Theatre.

The award and lecture honor the late outstanding civil rights attorney, who was the first African American to be admitted to the Delaware bar. Redding, who died in 1998 at age 96, was a graduate of Howard High School in Wilmington and an alumnus of Brown University and the Harvard Law School. In 1929, Redding became the first African American admitted to the Delaware Bar.

An outstanding jurist, Redding was instrumental in a host of cases that transformed the legal and social fabric of the state and the nation. He successfully opened the doors of the University and Delaware public schools to African Americans and, with Thurgood Marshall, argued and won the landmark 1954 Brown vs. Board of Education case in which the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the "separate but equal" system of school segregation.

Past recipients of the award include: James Newton, retired professor of Black American Studies at UD, and a senior fellow in the Center for Community Research and Service at UD; Juan Villamarin, retired professor of anthropology and former chairperson of the Department of Anthropology; the McNair Scholars Program; University Gallery; the College of Engineering's RISE (Resources to Insure Successful Engineers) Program; the Office of Residence Life; the University Library; and the School of Urban Affairs and Public Policy.

Nomination forms for the award can be picked up from 124 Hullihen Hall. The completed forms and supporting documentation, which should be no more than two pages, should be returned to Gloria Davis in 124 Hullihen Hall by March 9.
