Prof. Eidelman appointed to UN Expert Group
1:26 p.m., Feb. 22, 2007--Steven Eidelman, Robert Edelsohn Chair in Disabilities Studies in UD's Department of Individual and Family Studies, has been appointed to the United Nations Expert Group on Ensuring Access in Support of the Implementation of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The expert group, comprised of members from around the world, is convening Feb. 21-23 in New York. The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities reaffirms human rights and fundamental freedoms for all persons with disabilities, guided by inclusion. The goals of the expert group are to implement the rights of persons with disabilities by assessing current knowledge and interventions, identifying gaps and areas that need to be developed to achieve a “no gap” policy and developing recommendations for intervention on a global scale through a knowledge-management system. As a member of the expert group, Eidelman will focus on deinstitutionalization and community inclusion of adults with intellectual disabilities, based on experiences in the United States, Canada and parts of Western Europe, Australia and New Zealand. He will do a presentation on “Ensuring Access through Independent Living.” Experts from academia, nongovernment organizations, organizations of persons with disabilities, and United Nations departments and agencies have been invited to participate. Eidelman was appointed the Robert Edelsohn Chair of Disabilities Studies in 2005. He has bachelor's and master's degrees in social work from the University of Maryland, a master's degree in business administration from Loyola College and a post-master's certificate in social services administration from Temple University. He has held administrative positions with different agencies and foundations, and served as executive director of The Arc of the United States, an advocacy organization for people with cognitive disabilities and their families.
