Folk-rock musician Catie Curtis at CFA March 9

Catie Curtis

1:20 p.m., Feb. 13, 2007--Famed folk-rock musician Catie Curtis, a recent grand prize winner at the International Songwriting Competition, will appear in concert at 7:30 p.m., Friday, March 9, at UD's Thompson Theatre in the Center for the Arts.

Her winning song, written with Mark Erelli, was “People Look Around,” focusing on the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. It was selected from 15,000 entries from 82 countries by judges, who included Tom Waits, Loretta Lynn, Macy Gray and Sonny Rollins.

Curtis' lyrics are often emotional narratives on such themes as domestic violence, corporate greed, religion, homelessness, peace and gay issues. Her songs have been used in television shows, including Grey's Anatomy, Dawson's Creek, Felicity and Alias, and in films including 500 Miles to Graceland and A Slipping Down Life.

Curtis has toured the United States and Europe extensively and appeared on bills with Dar Williams and Richard Thompson. A supporter of social causes, Curtis has given concerts benefiting Paul Newman's Hole in the Wall Gang Camp for children with life-threatening illness, PFLAG (Parents, Friends & Family of Lesbians & Gays) and others.

Tickets are now on sale and cost $5 for UD students, $10 for faculty/staff and senior citizens and $15 for the general public. To purchase tickets, call the UD box office at (302) 831-4012.

The event is sponsored by the Office of Women's Affairs, NOW CAN (National Organization for Women Campus Action Group), the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Community Office, Haven and SAGE (Students Acting for Gender Equality).
