Videos complement consulting help

4:02 p.m., Feb. 28, 2007--Have questions about how to connect your computer to the University's network? Looking for information about ways to best secure information and files on your computer?

A video series produced by IT-User Services provides answers to these questions and more.

“We wanted a new approach to reach campus computer users--one that complements the computer and technology help that currently exists on campus,” Ron Nichols, manager, IT-User Services, said.

That approach--a video series called “Consulting on Demand”-- broadens the computer consulting services already in place. The videos play on both Windows and Macintosh computers with free software: QuickTime or iTunes. Episodes are available on a subscription basis (RSS or iTunes) or “on demand” (download the episodes at your convenience).

“You can use any web browser or program that allows you to subscribe to an RSS feed. If you use iTunes to subscribe, you can watch an episode on a computer or an iPod,” Nichols said.

“We believe the blend of video instructions and related online documentation makes computer help more accessible to a broader group of individuals,” Nichols said.

National top honors

In its first year of production, UD's “Consulting on Demand” project won the title of overall winner in the promotional video/audio category in the SIGUCCS 2006 Higher Education Publications competition.

SIGUCCS, an association of professionals who support and manage the diverse aspects of information technology services at higher education institutions, is the Special Interest Group for University and College Computing Services of ACM, the Association for Computing Machinery.

According to Leila Lyons, director of IT-User Services and chairperson of the ACM-SIGUCCS since 2005, the recognition that UD received is significant due to the scale and caliber of the ACM-SIGUCCS conference.

“Established 60 years ago, ACM is the world's first educational and scientific computing society. SIGUCCS was formed in 1963,” Lyons said.
