Tribute to local composer to feature spirituals

3:49 p.m., Feb. 16, 2007--A tribute to Daniel Ridout Jr., a recognized local composer, musician, arranger and teacher, who is known for his passionate arrangements of African-American spirituals, will be held at 4 p.m., Sunday, March 18, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1502 West 13th St., Wilmington. A reception for Ridout will follow immediately after the performance.

A choir will perform his compositions, including “The Widow's Prayer” (composed for Coretta Scott King after the death of her husband), spirituals and other popular/jazz compositions he has written.

Ridout's music has been digitalized by UD's music department and some of his compositions were included in a thesis by recent UD graduate Chris Kraus.

During his 80 years, Ridout has been a voice teacher in Delaware and Maryland public schools, has directed community and church choirs, including those at the Episcopal Church of Saints Andrew and Matthew and Westminster Presbyterian Church, and orchestras and has been a guest soloist and a member of the Great Hymns Choir of Baltimore. He founded the Sylvia Olden Lee Guild, Delaware's chapter of the National Association of Negro Musicians. He also served as a human relations counselor at A. I. du Pont High School.

Tickets are $35 and may be purchased beforehand or at the door. For information and tickets, contact Patricia Griffin at (302) 764-8468 or [psadlerg@aol.com].
