HTAC to stage dark Irish comedy Feb. 16-24

4:44 p.m., Feb. 8, 2007--The Cripple of Inishmaan, a comedy by celebrated Irish playwright Martin McDonagh, will be staged by the Harrington Theatre Arts Company (HTAC), UD's student-run theatre group, from Feb. 16-24.

The Cripple of Inishmaan, which has been described by critics as “darkly funny and bizarre,” centers on a protagonist named Billy, a person with a disability who lives a secluded life on a barren island off the Irish coast during the 1930s. When an American film crew arrives to shoot a movie, everything changes.

Originally premiering in 1997 at the National Theatre in London, where it played to sold-out houses, The Cripple of Inishmaan includes in its cast a salty-tongued vixen, an elderly boozer and a loose-lipped town gossip.

HTAC evening performances of the play are set for 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 16 and 17, and on Thursday-Saturday, Feb. 22-24. A matinee performance is set for 2 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 18. All performances will take place in the Bacchus Theatre in the Perkins Student Center.

Tickets, which can be purchased at the door, are $3 for UD students with valid ID and $5 for adults and the general public. For more information, e-mail [czadek@udel.edu].
