UD swim teams finish fifth, eighth in CAA meet

Maryann Walker was UD’s lone individual champion in the CAA meet, winning the 200 backstroke.

8:55 a.m., Feb. 19, 2007--The University of Delaware women's team finished fifth and the men's team finished eighth in the Colonial Athletic Association swimming and diving championships that ended Saturday at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va.

The Fightin' Blue Hens picked up their only individual championship finish Saturday night as sophomore Maryann Walker won the women's 200 backstroke with a time of 2:02.87 to break her own school record. In winning, Walker became UD's first individual champion since 2004-05.

The College of William & Mary captured the conference women's championship with 623 points to outdistance defending champion University of North Carolina Wilmington (572.5 points), Towson University (565), George Mason University (462), Delaware (331), Northeastern University (259.5), Davidson College (211), Drexel University (196), James Madison University (186), the College of Charleston (159.5) and Old Dominion University (159.5).

UNC Wilmington captured its second straight men's team title with 573 points, and was followed by George Mason (518), James Madison (506), William & Mary (401), Old Dominion (387), Towson (377), Davidson (273), Delaware (268), College of Charleston (206) and Drexel (70).

In women's action Saturday, UD's Kellie Pastore finished eighth in the 200 breaststroke (2:25.38), the 400 freestyle relay team of Walker, Rachel Greene, Meredith Law and Sarah Begley finished ninth in a time of 3:34.67, Stephanie House finished ninth in the 200 butterfly (2:07.38) and Michelle Stephens finished 10th in the 200 breaststroke (2:26.50).

In men's action Saturday, Matt Abbruzzese finished fourth in the three-meter dive (272.55 points), Andrew Zinn finished fourth in the 100 freestyle (46.04), the 400 freestyle relay team of John Ohlhaver, Brendan Spencer, Adam Blomberg and Zinn finished seventh in 3:08.24 and Garrett Arant finished seventh in the 1,650 freestyle (16:22.89).

UD's Ben Blotner finished eighth in the three-meter dive (203.15), Tom Gallagher finished ninth in the three-meter dive (185.75), Joe Virion finished 10th in the 1,650 freestyle (16:29.61), and Troy Sattgast finished 10th in the 200 butterfly with the second fastest time in school history at 1:54.82.

Ohlhaver finished 11th in the 200 backstroke with a school record time of 1:53.49, breaking the previous mark of 1:53.91 set by Pat Mead in 1991-92.

In action Friday, the men's team set two school records as Ohlhaver finished sixth in the 100 backstroke with a school record time of 52.29, breaking the previous record of 52.40 set by Josh Smith in 1994-95. Ohlhaver then teamed with Zinn, Scott Tsuchitani and Blomberg to finish sixth in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:24.50. That time broke the school record of 1:24.59 by Mike Servant, Kyal Hackett, Pete Holcroft, and Clint Tracy in 1992-93.

In women's competition Friday, Begley finished fifth in the 100 butterfly (57.28) and Emily Smathers finished fifth in the 100 backstroke (58.21), breaking her own school record.

Pastore finished sixth in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.59), Walker finished sixth in the 100 backstroke (58.79) and Michelle Stephens finished sixth in the 400 individual medley (4:32.24). The 200 freestyle relay team of Greene, Kendall Warren, Begley and Walker finished seventh (1:37.43), breaking the school record of 1:37.87 set by Jenna Blongiewicz, Andrea Rossi, Sara Stephens, and Jill Fitzgerald in 2001-02.
