Hens’ Ben Blotner takes 4th in CAA diving event

UD freshman Ben Blotner took fourth place in the three-meter diving event at the CAA championships.

8:07 a.m., Feb. 16, 2007--The second day of the Colonial Athletic Association swimming and diving championships, being held at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va., saw University of Delaware competitors earn seven top 10 finishes.

UD's top finisher on Thursday was freshman diver Ben Blotner, who took fourth place in the three-meter dive with a score of 249.0 points.

The four-day meet will continue today and conclude Saturday, with preliminaries at 10 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m. on both days. Results are being carried by clicking on CAA swimming and diving live stats at the conference web site [www.caasports.com].

In men's competition, George Mason University moved into first place with 211 points, and was followed by James Madison University, defending champion University of North Carolina Wilmington, Towson University, the College of William & Mary, Old Dominion University, Delaware, Davidson College, the College of Charleston and Drexel University.

UD's Matt Abbruzzese was sixth in the one-meter dive (242.40 points) and Andrew Zinn was eighth in the 50 freestyle (21:10), recording the second fastest time in UD history. The 400 medley relay team of John Ohlhaver, Mark Erdosy, Adam Blomberg and Zinn finished ninth (3:30.22), as did Tom Gallagher in the three-meter dive.

Also posting top 20 finishes for the UD men were Brendan Spencer, who was 19th in the 200 individual medley (1:58.88), and Joe Virion, who was 20th in the 500 freestyle (4:44.57).

In women's competition, William & Mary took the top spot with 234 points, followed by defending champion UNC Wilmington, George Mason, Towson, Delaware, Northeastern, Davidson, James Madison, Drexel, College of Charleston and Old Dominion.

UD's 400 medley relay team of Emily Smathers, Kellie Pastore, Sarah Begley and Maryann Walker finished sixth (3:54.17), as did Michelle Stephens in the 200 individual medley (2:08.56).

Meredith Law was 11th in the 500 freestyle (5:02.14), Sarah Begley was 13th in the 50 freestyle (24.33), recording the second fastest time in school history, and Rachel Greene was 19th in the 50 freestyle (24.66).
