CAA swim meet opens with relay events, diving

Meredith Law was a member of the UD 800 freestyle relay team that finished fourth in the CAA championship meet.

8:55 a.m., Feb. 15, 2007--The University of Delaware swimming and diving teams opened the annual Colonial Athletic Association championships with strong showings in the 800 freestyle relay events Wednesday night at George Mason University's McKay Natatorium.

The Fightin' Blue Hens women's freestyle relay team finished fourth in the second fastest time in UD history and the men's team finished sixth in the fastest time in school history.

Taking fourth in the 800 freestyle relay was the UD team of Meredith Law, Stephanie House, Kendall Warren and Maryann Walker, whose time was 7:39.17. The men's team of Andrew Zinn, Brendan Spencer, John Ohlhaver and Adam Blomberg finished in 6:53.59, breaking the previous UD record of 6:55.18 set by Scott Edmonds, Bob Bunda, Doug Copper and Karl Saimre in 1988-89.

Also Wednesday, the UD women's 200 medley relay team of Emily Watts, Kellie Pastore, Sarah Begley and Rachel Greene finished sixth in a time of 1:48.16, the third best time in school history. The men's team of Adam Mullan, Mark Erdosy, Scott Tsuchitani and Zinn finished ninth in 1:35.55.

Individually, UD diver Sarah Bergan finished ninth in the three-meter event with 198.50 points while teammate Emily Pretz was 12th and Lisa Goyette was 19th.

The four-day meet will continue today with preliminaries at 10 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m. Results are being carried by clicking on CAA swimming and diving live stats at the conference web site [www.caasports.com].

The UD women's team is currently in fourth place with 70 points. Host George Mason University is in the lead with 111 points, followed by the College of William & Mary, defending champion University of North Carolina Wilmington, UD, Towson University, Davidson College, Northeastern University, Drexel University, the College of Charleston, James Madison University and Old Dominion University.

Defending champion UNC Wilmington took the lead in the men's team standings with 68 points, followed by George Mason, Old Dominion, James Madison, William & Mary, Towson, College of Charleston, UD, which is eighth with 44 points, and Davidson.
