Brecht symposium, 'Galileo' performance set March 3

4:38 p.m., Feb. 23, 2007--A Bertolt Brecht symposium and performance of his play, The Life of Galileo by UD's Professional Theatre Training Program (PTTP), will take place at the University, Saturday, March 3.

The symposium begins at 2 p.m. in the Ewing Room of the Perkins Student Center. Richard Zipser, UD professor of German, will be the moderator, and the program will include:

“The Earth Does Not Stand Still--Thoughts on Brecht's Galileo,” keynote address by Guy Stern, Distinguished Professor of German Emeritus, Wayne State University;
“The Actor's Art and Brecht's Theatricality” by Richard Davison, UD professor of English emeritus;
“Defining Dialectics between Space and Storytelling” by William Browning, UD professor of theatre;
“Brecht in Motion: Translating Galileo to the American Stage” by Mark Harman, professor of German and English, Elizabethtown College; and
“What Can a Galileo Production Reveal?” by Heinz-Uwe Haus, UD professor of theatre.

A performance of Brecht's Life of Galileo will be held at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, March 3, in the Hartshorn Hall Theatre, followed by a reception and postperformance discussion with the cast, cochaired by Norman Roessler, editor of Communications from the International Brecht Society, Temple University; and Klaus Schmidt, professor of German emeritus, Bowling Green State University/Universität Salzburg.

The event is sponsored by UD's College of Arts and Sciences, the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, the Department of English and the Department of Theatre/Professional Theatre Training Program, with thanks to the International Brecht Society and the International Society for the Study of European Ideas. The symposium organizers were Haus and Zipser.

A preview performance of The Life of Galileo will be held at 7:30 p.m., Friday, March 2. Other performances are scheduled for 2 p.m., Sunday, March 4; 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, March 7, and Friday, March 9; and 2 p.m. Saturday, March 10, and Sunday, March 11.
