UD’s Alex Smith is one of the nation’s top face-off specialists.

8:44 a.m., Feb. 23, 2007--This Blue Hen Weekend will feature men's lacrosse and women's basketball on campus. The No. 15-ranked Fightin' Blue Hens lacrosse team will take on Manhattan College at 1 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 24, at Rullo Stadium and the high-powered women's basketball team will battle Drexel University in a Colonial Athletic Association game at 1 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 25, at the Bob Carpenter Center.

The UD men's lacrosse team is 2-0, with home victories over St. Joseph's University and Lehigh University. Manhattan will be playing its first game of the season.

The Hens feature a number of top tier players, including All-America face-off specialist Alex Smith, All-America midfielder Jordan Hall, who helped lead Canada to the world championship in 2006, and top returning scorers Cam Howard and Dan Deckelbaum, who combined for 60 goals last season.

The UD women's basketball team is 23-4 overall and 14-2 in the CAA following Thursday's victory over nationally ranked James Madison University. The Hens stand in third place in the conference with just two games left in the regular season, and are battling for the best possible seed as they approach the CAA championship tournament, which will be played March 8-11 at the Bob Carpenter Center.

The Hens feature seniors Tyresa Smith, who UD Head Coach Tina Martin has called the best guard every to play for Delaware, Chrissy Fisher and Alena Koshansky.

Away from home, the hard-hitting UD baseball team will open its season with a series at the University of Richmond. The teams will meet at 2:30 p.m., Friday, Feb. 23, and at 1 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. The Hens went 30-24 last season, leading all of college baseball in home runs per game, doubles per game and slugging percentage. They established new school records for home runs and extra base hits.

The games Friday and Saturday will be broadcast live on the University of Delaware campus radio station, WVUD-FM 91.3.

The UD attack will once again be led by junior centerfielder Brandon Menchaca (.395 batting average, with 16 home runs and 64 runs batted in), sophomore second baseman Alex Buchholz (.378, 18 homers, 64 RBI) and senior co-captain Bryan Hagerich (.288, 16 homers, 55 RBI).

On the mound, Head Coach Jim Sherman welcomes a host of arms poised to reinforce a unit that was ravaged by injuries in 2006. Senior lefthanders Brent Gaphardt and co-captain Mitch Heckert return to health following elbow surgery, and newcomer David Slovak finished 2006 with 14 saves, good for second place among the nation's junior colleges.

The Hens will return home to face St. Joseph's University in their home opener on Wednesday, Feb. 28, before traveling to Charlottesville, Va., to take on the No. 7 University of Virginia March 2-4.
