Agrability seeks volunteers

3:35 p.m., Feb. 20, 2007--The Delaware-Maryland Agrability Project (DMAP) is looking for a few good men and women to help farmers with disabilities. DMAP assists farmers with disabilities so that they can continue to have successful careers in agriculture. The program is a partnership of the universities of Delaware and Maryland, Easter Seals and the Center for Independent Living.

DMAP assesses farmers' workplaces and tasks and recommends equipment modifications and assistive technologies. The program also loans equipment, provides peer support and identifies funding sources.

DMAP is launching a new initiative, the DMAP Ambassador Program, to reach more farmers with disabilities. This volunteer program will focus on increasing awareness of services available to farmers and agricultural workers with disabilities.

Potential volunteers can learn more about the Ambassador Program and DMAP at an information session from 9:30 a.m.-noon, Thursday, March 1, at the Carvel Research and Education Center, 16483 County Seat Highway, Georgetown. Farm and community leaders; professionals in health care, physical and occupational therapy; and all interested parties are invited to attend to learn more about the project. For more information, call Ron Jester at (302) 856-7303.
