WVUD to broadcast 'A Christmas Carol' live

4:33 p.m., Dec. 14, 2006--UD's campus radio station, WVUD-FM 91.3, will broadcast the Delaware First State Theater's adaptation of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, live at 7 p.m., Monday, Dec. 18, from the Delaware Theatre Company stage in Wilmington. The cast includes UD alumni and current students of UD's Professional Theatre Training Program (PTTP).

Michael Boudewyns, artistic director for the First State Children's Theater, said this is the third year WVUD and the Delaware First State Theater have presented a live radio broadcast of the two-hour performance.

“We chose to work with WVUD because WVUD is interested in and committed to serving the community,” Boudewyns said. “WVUD is not only a part of the UD campus, but it is also an important part of Newark and northern Delaware.”

Dave Mackenzie, WVUD's chief engineer, said the station has been collaborating with the theater to make sure its Internet connectivity was fast enough for the live broadcast.

“We have been working with the Delaware Theater Company for several weeks on the connectivity issues from their location,” Mackenzie said. “They needed to upgrade their Internet connections to allow the streamcasting to work from their network.”

WVUD uses streamcasting hardware over the Internet to deliver the broadcast live from the theater, Mackenzie said, and also will be recording the performance on minidisk at the theater for rebroadcast and for podcasting.

“We have used this technology on campus to broadcast live from the Trabant Multipurpose Room for various events,” Mackenzie said. “We used it earlier in the month from the Performing Arts Center to broadcast the announcement of the new University president live.” Tickets are $8 for adults and $6.50 for children. For tickets or information on the Delaware Theatre Company, call (302) 594-1100.

A Christmas Carol will be rebroadcast:

  • Tuesday, Dec. 19, 7-9 p.m.;
  • Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2-4 p.m.;
  • Thursday, Dec. 21, 4-6 p.m.;
  • Friday, Dec. 22, 6-8 p.m.;
  • Sunday, Dec. 24, 1-3 p.m.; and
  • Monday, Dec. 25, 1-3 p.m. and 6-8 p.m.
