Blue Hen Weekend: UD women’s basketball

8:19 a.m., Dec. 8, 2006--Enjoying a six-game winning streak, the University of Delaware women's basketball team will take the court against Boston University at 1 p.m., Sunday, at the Bob Carpenter Center.

The Fightin' Blue Hens, led by Head Coach Tina Martin, are 7-1 overall and have been getting national attention with votes in both the Associated Press and USA Today/ESPN polls.

The Hens feature a solid defense and have 101 steals on the season to just 40 for their opponents. They are scoring an average of 70 points per game and allowing just 57.

UD senior guard Tyresa Smith is averaging 18.1 points and 7.4 rebounds per game and senior forward Chrissy Fisher is averaging 16.5 points and 9.1 rebounds per game.

Energetic guards Alena Koshansky and Kyle DeHaven lead the team in both assists and steals. Koshansky, a senior who is scoring 5.8 points per game, has 27 assists and 20 steals. DeHaven, a junior in her first season with the Hens after transferring from the College of William & Mary, is scoring 8.3 points per game and has 26 assists and 26 steals.

The Hens also are getting strong play from juniors Melissa Czorniewy and Courtney Irving, both scoring more than 7 points per game.

Boston University, which is 5-3, enters the game on a two-game winning streak with recent victories over Eastern Michigan University and Brown University. The Terriers are paced by guards Katie Meinhardt, who is scoring 14.4 points per game, and Cheri Raffo, who is scoring 11.5 points per game. Senior forward Erica Kovach is scoring 9.5 points per game and leads the team with 66 rebounds.
