Late Fisher basket lifts UD women’s basketball

Chrissy Fisher hit a late jump shot to lift the Hens to a 63-62 victory over Massachusetts.

8:54 a.m., Dec. 18, 2006--Senior forward Chrissy Fisher scored on a jump shot with just 14 seconds left to lift the University of Delaware women's basketball team to a 63-62 victory over the host University of Massachusetts on Sunday afternoon.

The victory was the eighth straight for the Fightin' Blue Hens, who are now 9-1 on the season. The loss dropped Massachusetts, which saw its 10-game home winning streak snapped, to 9-3.

UD will return to action with a home game against Fordham University at 7 p.m., Friday, at the Bob Carpenter Center. They will then travel to No. 21-ranked Bowling Green State University for a game at 7 p.m., Friday, Dec. 29. Fordham is 2-7 following a 53-52 loss to Providence College while Bowling Green, the defending Mid-American Conference champion, is 7-1.

After the holidays, the Hens will enter the heart of their Colonial Athletic Association schedule with a key home game against Hofstra University at 7 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 4. Hofstra has won seven straight games and is 8-1 on the season. Like the Hens, Hofstra has been earning attention with votes in the national polls.

In Sunday's victory over Massachusetts, the Hens trailed 32-30 at the half and 53-48 with 8:58 left to play. Then Alena Koshansky hit a three-point basket and Tyresa Smith added a lay-up to tie the game 53-53, only to see Massachusetts score six straight points. Koshansky hit another three-point shot and Smith added a basket to narrow the gap to 59-58.

UD's Kyle DeHaven then hit a three-point shot from the corner to give the Hens the lead at 61-59 with 1:13 remaining. Massachusetts went up 62-61 on its own three-point basket but the lead was short-lived as Fisher found room from near the foul line to sink the winning basket.

Smith led the Hens with 20 points, nine rebounds and six steals. Forward Courtney Irving added 12 points, and DeHaven and Fisher scored 10 each. Koshansky had eight points and six assists.

“We are very happy with the win,” UD Head Coach Tina Martin said. “We lacked a spark defensively today but we executed at the end of the game, which was most important.”
