UD women’s basketball wins seventh straight

Tyresa Smith had 24 points and 13 rebounds in the Hens’ victory over Boston University.

8:28 a.m., Dec. 11, 2006--Recording 23 steals and forcing 29 turnovers, the University of Delaware women's basketball team defeated Boston University 79-59 on Sunday afternoon before 1,105 fans at the Bob Carpenter Center.

The victory was the seventh straight for the Fightin' Blue Hens, who improved to 8-1 on the season.

UD will return to action with a game at 2 p.m., Sunday, at the University of Massachusetts. The Hens will return home for their final game before the holidays, taking on Fordham University at 7 p.m., Friday, Dec. 22, at the Bob Carpenter Center. Massachusetts is 8-2 and Fordham is 2-7, and both compete in the Atlantic 10 Conference.

In Sunday's game, Boston University (5-4) had a 27-26 lead with 6:49 left to play in the first half when the Hens went on a 15-6 run to take a 41-33 halftime lead. UD then outscored the Terriers 16-3 over the first six minutes of the second half to take control of the game.

Senior guard Tyresa Smith led the Hens with 24 points and 13 rebounds. She also had two steals to set the UD career record with 278, breaking the old mark of 277 set by Lisa Cano from 1984-88.

Guard Melissa Czorniewy had 15 points, forward Chrissy Fisher had 14 and forward Courtney Irving had 10. Guard Kyle DeHaven set a UD single game record with nine steals and Alena Koshansky had six steals and seven assists.
