UD women’s basketball hands LaSalle first loss

UD’s Kristina Gineitis had 11 points and five rebounds in the victory over LaSalle.

8:12 a.m., Dec. 6, 2006--Behind an energetic and disruptive defense, the University of Delaware women's basketball team defeated host LaSalle University 66-52 on Tuesday night in Philadelphia. It was the first loss of the season for the Explorers.

“The defense was sound tonight and we moved the ball well as a team in the second half offensively,” UD Head Coach Tina Martin said. “It was a great win on the road against an undefeated team."

With the victory, the Fightin' Blue Hens improved to 7-1. They will return to action with a home game against Boston University at 1 p.m., Sunday, at the Bob Carpenter Center. The Terriers are 4-3, and are led by guards Katie Meinhardt, who is scoring 13.7 points per game, and Cheri Raffo, who is scoring 12.9 points per game.

In the victory over LaSalle, which fell to 7-1, the Hens were led by senior guard Tyresa Smith, who had 19 points and 10 rebounds, and forward Chrissy Fisher, who had 15 points and 12 rebounds.

UD point guard Alena Koshansky had seven points, four steals and three assists, and Kristina Gineitis came off the bench to add 11 points and five rebounds.

The Hens received votes in two national polls this week, earning 11 votes in the Associated Press top 25 poll and four votes in the USA Today/ESPN coaches' poll. Last week, the Hens received votes in the AP poll for the first time in program history, gaining nine, and also had five votes in the USA Today/ESPN poll. Fellow CAA member Hofstra University, which is 5-1 with an upset victory over No. 20 Michigan State University, received 17 votes in the AP poll and one in the USA Today/ESPN poll.

Sunday's game will be broadcast on WWTX-AM The Ticket 1290 and on WDOV-AM 1410. Live statistics will be available at the UD athletics web site [www.udel.edu/sportsinfo].
