Blue Hen indoor track, field teams open season

UD’s Michelle Gomes set a school record in the 300 meters.

9:35 a.m., Dec. 4, 2006--The University of Delaware indoor track and field team opened the 2006-07 season with two victories at the Jack Pyrah Invitational meet held Friday at the Haverford (Pa.) College Field House.

UD sophomore Amanda Marshall won the shot put with a throw of 40 feet, 8 1/4 inches, the fourth best in school history, and sophomore Kelli McDonald captured the pole vault by clearing 11 feet, 3 3/4 inches, to lead the Fightin' Blue Hens women's team.

Also for the Hens, sophomore sprinter Michelle Gomes set a new UD record of 40.74 as she finished third in the 300-meter dash. That broke the old mark of 42.49 sets by current teammate Brittany Wright in 2005. Gomes also ran the third fastest 55 meters in school history, at 7.26, as she finished second in that event.

Stephanie Cronk finished second in the weight throw and ninth in the shot put, Annie Fulton finished second in the triple jump and sixth in the long jump, and Asha Quant finished second in the long jump, sixth in the 300 meters and eighth in the 55 meters.

For the UD men's team, freshman Chase Renoll finished second in the shot put with a throw of 49 feet, 1 3/4 inches, and Dave DiVirgilio finished second in the pole vault, clearing 13 feet, 11 1/4 inches.

Also for the UD men, Greg Stirparo was third in the weight throw, Mike Roth was third in the mile, Brandon Swartout was fourth in the triple jump and sixth in the long jump, and Matt Arbaugh was fourth in the pole vault.

Both UD teams will resume action when they travel to the Fordham University Invitational in New York City on Jan. 5.
