34 employees join Great American Smokeout

William Nottingham (left) and Daniel Brice, both from Facilities, joined in the Great American Smokeout on Nov. 16.

2 p.m., Dec. 11, 2006--Thirty-four University employees observed the American Cancer Society's Great American Smokeout on Nov. 16 by giving up tobacco products for 24 hours. An additional eight employees served as supporters for those who were attempting to go smoke-free for the day.

“A record number of employees participated this year, in large part due to the active support of Facilities managers and supervisors,” Linda Smith, Employee Wellness Program coordinator, said. "We appreciate Patty Fogg, Facilities administrator, and her staff's efforts in helping us promote this event."

Participants signed a Smokeout contract and received a survival pack that included materials designed to distract participants from their urge to smoke, tobacco cessation information and a cold turkey sandwich.

Daniel Brice of Facilities was the winner of a $25 gift certificate to Jose's Border Cafe. “I felt really good after not smoking on that day, and I've only had about three smokes since then. I am working on quitting,” Brice said.

According to the U.S. Surgeon General's Report, smokers are 50 percent more likely to be succeed in quitting when they are actively supported by coworkers, friends or family members. Since the Smokeout, 73 percent of UD employee participants who completed a program evaluation indicated that they have either quit smoking or that they have reduce the number of cigarettes they smoke daily.
