Men's basketball team announces four recruits

9:50 a.m., Dec. 1, 2006--Four high school standouts, including two from Delaware, have signed NCAA National Letters of Intent and will compete for the University of Delaware men's basketball team beginning with the 2007-08 season, Head Coach Monté Ross announced Thursday. The recruits are Ryan Bacon, D.J. Boney, Alphonso Dawson and Edwin Santiago.

“We are very happy to have these young men join our program,” Ross said. “We feel they are a good fit academically, athletically and socially to uphold the values of the University of Delaware.”

Bacon, a 6-foot, 7-inch forward from Maplewood, N.J., played last season at Columbia High School and will play at St. Benedict's Prep during his senior season. Bacon averaged 16.8 points, 12 rebounds, six blocks, four assists and two steals per game as a junior while leading Columbia to a 21-5 record.

Boney, a 6-4 guard from Stanton, averaged 13 points and 10 rebounds per game last season while leading Tatnall School to the Delaware state championship.

Dawson, a 6-4 swing guard from Harrisburg, Pa., was a second team all-state selection last season when he averaged 18 points and 10 rebounds a game. Dawson led Harrisburg High School to a 28-2 record during his sophomore season while last year the Cougars went 32-2, won the District 3 Class AAAA championship, and reached the state semifinals.

Santiago, a 6-2 guard from Elsmere, averaged 17 points, six rebounds and three assists while shooting 79 percent from the free throw line last season at Sanford School, where he was a second team all-state selection.
