Bob Shillinglaw, head coach of the UD men’s lacrosse team.

4:30 p.m., Dec. 7, 2006--The University of Delaware men's lacrosse team, which returns seven starters from the 2006 team that posted a 12-5 record and advanced to the Colonial Athletic Association championship game, has been picked No. 19 in the Inside Lacrosse/Face-Off Yearbook pre-season NCAA Division I poll.

The Fightin' Blue Hens, led by Head Coach Bob Shillinglaw, were one of three CAA teams selected in the media poll. Towson University was selected No. 11 and defending CAA champion Hofstra was selected No. 15.

UD will open the 2007 season Feb. 10 against St. Joseph's University at Rullo Stadium.

The Hens have posted a combined record of 23-11 the last two seasons, advancing to the CAA title game both years and competing in the NCAA national championship tournament in 2005. This year's team returns seven starters and 20 letter winners. The team is led by All-America face-off specialist Alex Smith, All-America midfielder Jordan Hall, who this summer helped lead his native Canada to the world lacrosse championship, and top returning scorers Cam Howard (29 goals, 27 assists) and Dan Deckelbaum (31 goals). Starting goalkeeper Tommy Scherr is also back.

Defending national champion the University of Virginia, which posted a perfect 17-0 mark a year ago, is the pre-season favorite. The Cavaliers are followed in the poll by Johns Hopkins University, Syracuse University, Princeton University, Georgetown University, Duke University, the University of Maryland, Cornell University, the U.S. Naval Academy, the University of Massachusetts, Towson, Loyola College of Maryland, the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Denver, Hofstra, the University of Notre Dame, Penn State University, the University of Maryland Baltimore County, Delaware, the State University of New York at Albany, the University of North Carolina, Dartmouth College, Harvard University, the U.S. Military Academy and Hobart College.
