Delaware’s Ben Patrick is selected All-America
8:23 a.m., Dec. 11, 2006--University of Delaware senior tight end Ben Patrick, who led all NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision tight ends in receptions this season, has been named first team All-America by the Walter Camp Foundation. The Walter Camp team is the first of four Football Championship Subdivision (formerly NCAA Division I-AA) teams to be announced this month. The American Football Coaches Association and the Sports Network All-America teams will be announced later this week and the Associated Press team will be announced later this month. Patrick, a 6-foot 5-inch, 270-pound senior, is just the third tight end in UD history to earn All-America honors and the first to earn first team honors. Former Fightin' Blue Hens Jaime Young (1979) and Jeff Modesitt (1986) earned Associated Press honorable mention. Patrick is also just the fifth player in UD history to earn Walter Camp All-America honors, joining wide receiver Eddie Conti and offensive lineman Brian Cook in 1998, center Jeff Fiss in 2000 and defensive back Sidney Haugabrook in 2004. A transfer from Duke University and a strong pro prospect, Patrick caught 64 passes for 639 yards and six touchdowns in his only season with the Hens, setting a UD single season record for receptions by a tight end and ranking third in the conference in receptions at 5.82 per game. His 5.82 receptions per game and 58.1 yards per game were also tops among all Football Championship Subdivision tight ends during the regular season. He caught at least five passes in each of the final nine games of the season and had nine catches for 109 yards and one touchdown against the University of New Hampshire, then ranked No. 1 in the nation, on Sept. 30. In November, Patrick earned first team All-Atlantic 10 Conference honors, becoming the first UD tight end to be named to the all-conference team. The Atlantic 10 Conference dominated the Walter Camp All-America team with eight of the 26 selections. Joining Patrick were wide receiver David Ball and quarterback Ricky Santos of New Hampshire, offensive lineman Corey Davis and linebacker Akeem Jordan of James Madison University, kicker Rob Zarrilli of Hofstra University, defensive lineman Matt King of the University of Maine and defensive back James Ihedigbo of the University of Massachusetts. |
