UD’s Menchaca named to baseball 'watch list’

UD slugger Brandon Menchaca has been named to the preseason Brook Wallace Award watch list.

9:22 a.m., Dec. 5, 2006--University of Delaware junior centerfielder Brandon Menchaca has been named to the 2007 Brooks Wallace Award “watch list” by the College Baseball Foundation. The award is presented annually to the national college baseball player of the year.

Menchaca is one of 148 players selected to the preseason watch, and joins two other Colonial Athletic Association players on the list: James Madison University outfielder Kellen Kulbacki and Virginia Commonwealth University shortstop Sergio Miranda.

In 2006, Menchaca led the Fightin' Blue Hens with a .395 average and tied for the team lead with 64 runs batted in. He hit 16 home runs, 20 doubles and nine triples, scored 61 runs and stole 28 bases in 30 attempts. He finished in the top eight in the CAA in every offensive category except for walks.

Menchaca, who played for the Harwich Mariners in the prestigious Cape Cod Summer League this year, was part of a powerful UD offense that led the nation in home runs, doubles and slugging percentage. He was named first team All-CAA, first team American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) All-East, third team Louisville Slugger All-America and third team ABCA All-America

UD will open the 2007 season with a three-game series at the University of Richmond from Feb. 23-25.
