UD men’s basketball opens CAA campaign

Forward Herb Courtney is scoring 14.4 points per game to lead the Hens.

9:42 a.m., Dec. 20, 2006--The University of Delaware men's basketball team will open its Colonial Athletic Association season with a game at 7 p.m., tonight, at Virginia Commonwealth University's Siegel Center in Richmond.

The Fightin' Blue Hens enter the game 0-7 while Virginia Commonwealth is 8-2 and has a six-game winning streak. The Rams have won the last seven meetings between the teams.

Virginia Commonwealth is one of four CAA teams ranked in a poll of top 25 mid-major college basketball teams, entering the list this week at No. 22. Drexel University, which last night upset Syracuse University 84-79, is ranked No. 12, Old Dominion University is No. 13 and Hofstra University is No. 15.

Virginia Commonwealth has three players averaging in double figures. Senior guard B.A. Walker is scoring 14.5 points per game, Jesse Pellot-Rosa 14.3 and Eric Maynor 12.8. Pellot-Rosa leads the team with 55 rebounds.

UD is expected to start a young lineup featuring freshmen guards Brian Johnson and Darrell Johnson, sophomore guard Zaire Taylor and junior forwards Herb Courtney and Henry Olawoye. Courtney leads the team in scoring, with 14.4 points per game, and Taylor is second with 13 points per game.

The game will be televised by Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic and broadcast by radio stations WRDX-FM The River 94.7 and WVUD-FM 91.3.
