Central Connecticut tops UD in men’s basketball

UD freshman point guard Brian Johnson had 14 points in the loss to Central Connecticut.

8:02 a.m., Dec. 7, 2006--The University of Delaware men's basketball team fell 63-60 to host Central Connecticut State University in a game played Wednesday night in New Britain, Conn.

The Fightin' Blue Hens held a 28-24 halftime lead and a 40-33 lead with 14:37 left to play. However, Central Connecticut battled back for the win, aided in part by UD's poor foul shooting. The Hens were just eight of 17 from the line on the night.

With the loss, UD fell to 0-7, the worst start since the 1956-57 season.

“If you want to win on the road, there are certain things you have to do well,” UD Head Coach Monté Ross said. “You have to take care of the ball, you have to play solid defense, and you have to hit your free throws. We did two of the three very well tonight. It's just disheartening to play the way we did and not come away with a win. We got some good contributions from some other guys tonight, but late in the game we just couldn't get a stop when we needed one.”

UD freshman point guard Brian Johnson led the Hens with 14 points, including three three-point baskets, and added four assists. Zaire Taylor scored 11 points, Darrell Johnson scored 10, and Herb Courtney had seven points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots.

The Hens will not return to action until Dec. 20, when they travel to Virginia Commonwealth University to open Colonial Athletic Association play.
