Vermont nips Delaware in men’s basketball

UD’s Zaire Taylor scored 19 points in the loss to Vermont.

9:10 a.m., Dec. 4, 2006--The University of Delaware men's basketball team came painfully close to earning its first win of the season only to see the University of Vermont win 57-55 on a late three-point basket in a game played Sunday afternoon before 2,925 fans at the Bob Carpenter Center.

With the loss, the Fightin' Blue Hens fell to 0-6. They will try to rebound with a road game at Central Connecticut State University in New Britain to be played at 7 p.m., Wednesday. The Blue Devils are 2-5.

Against Vermont, the Hens held a four-point advantage with just 1:38 to play but saw the lead slip away. Guard Zaire Taylor was the lone UD player to score in double figures, with 19 points. He also had six rebounds and three steals. Forward Herb Courtney had nine points and led the team with seven rebounds.

This was UD's first game without centers Matt Hewson, a sophomore who has withdrawn from the team to investigate transfer opportunities, and Raphael Madera, a senior who has been suspended indefinitely by Head Coach Monté Ross.
