3 Career Services Center staffers honored

Steve Sciscione

9:03 a.m., Dec. 21, 2006--Three Bank of America Career Services Center staffers have been recognized at regional conferences for outstanding achievement.

Steve Sciscione, associate director of career programming, received a Lifetime Achievement Award and Joyce Henderson, assistant director for employer outreach and multi-ethnic programming, received the Goodwill Award from the Mid-Atlantic Career Counseling Association (MACCA) at its 36th annual conference held Nov. 28-30 in Lancaster, Pa.

Cindy Holland, assistant director, received the 2006 Leadership Award from the Mid-Atlantic Association for Employment in Education (MAEE) at its annual conference, Nov. 29-Dec. 1, in Newark.

Sciscione advises students in the colleges of Agricultural and Natural Resources and Health Sciences and majors in the biology, medical technology and physical therapy departments. He also coordinates the biology co-op program. He joined the University's Career Services Center staff in 1983 as assistant director and was promoted to associate director one year later. He received a master of education degree from West Chester University and is a licensed professional counselor.

Joyce Henderson
Sciscione has served as MACCA president, vice president, conference chairperson, and as a presenter and volunteer for more than 20 years. He currently serves as member-at-large and chairperson of the evaluation committee. MACCA has awarded fewer than 10 Lifetime Achievement Awards since its inception in 1970.

Sciscione said he is very proud to have received the award. “It gives me a strong sense of accomplishment and contribution to a professional organization that has been instrumental in my life and the professional lives of my colleagues in the field of career development. I am very grateful and plan to continue my service with the organization [MACCA].”

Henderson advises art, art history, museum studies, music, languages, theatre and philosophy majors. She joined the UD staff in 1984 and assumed her current position in 2000 after working in employee services. A graduate of Salisbury (Md.) University, she received her master of public administration degree from UD in 1996. She served as the 35th president of MACCA from 2005-06, and currently serves as co-chairperson of its web and technology committee.

Henderson said the Goodwill Award represents going above and beyond the call of duty in the organization. “The goodwill
ambassador works for the good of the organization, not expecting
recognition for the work that he or she contributes. I feel honored to have been selected by my career counseling colleagues for this prestigious award,” she said.

MACCA's mission is to increase the effectiveness of career development and placement activities by encouraging an exchange of ideas and information among those in the field. The organization provides professional development resources for its 300 members from Delaware, Maryland, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Washington, D.C., and holds two major conferences each year, featuring well-known professionals in the field of career counseling.

Holland advises students in the College of Human Services, Education and Public Policy and all secondary education majors. She joined the Career Services Center staff in 1988. Before that, she was a teacher, counselor and career educator in public schools. Holland received a master of counseling and career development degree from Westfield State College in Massachusetts and a master's degree in physical education from UD. She has a secondary faculty appointment to the College of Health Sciences and is a nationally certified counselor and career counselor.

Cindy Holland
MAEE's leadership award is given for contributions above normal expectations in the role of an officer, a committee chairperson, a person making special efforts on behalf of the association or a person completing a term on the executive committee.

Holland has been an MAEE member since 1988, serving as president in 1996, on the executive board from 1993-97 and now serves as adviser to the executive committee, association webmaster and on several committees.

"I'm honored to receive the 2006 MAEE Leadership Award and humbled to have been recognized in this way by my professional colleagues and friends. MAEE continues to be the premier regional association focused on teacher recruitment activities, and I'm very proud to be part of this organization," Holland said.

MAEE acts as liaison between college and university career counselors and school personnel officials. It enables employers and career services officers to address common problems, needs and interests.
