UD men’s lacrosse team favored to win CAA title

Senior midfielder Dan Deckelbaum is one of four Hens named to a preseason All-America team.

8:48 a.m., Dec. 12, 2006--The University of Delaware men's lacrosse team is the favorite to capture the 2007 Colonial Athletic Association title this spring, according to a recent media poll announced by Inside Lacrosse/Face-Off Yearbook.

The Fightin' Blue Hens, who went 12-5 a year ago and advanced to the CAA championship game before falling to Hofstra University, are followed in the preseason poll by Towson University, Hofstra, Villanova University, Drexel University, Sacred Heart University and Robert Morris College.

Also, the publications named four UD players to a preseason All-America team and six Hens to a preseason All-CAA team. The All-America players are senior midfielders Jordan Hall and Dan Deckelbaum, senior face-off specialist Alex Smith and senior attackman Cam Howard. Those four were joined on the All-CAA team by junior goalkeeper Tommy Scherr and junior defender Patrick Biehl.

Hall, an All-America selection and the CAA Player of the Year in 2005, helped lead his native Canada to the world lacrosse championship this summer. Deckelbaum, a first team All-CAA selection last season, scored 31 goals to lead the Hens.

Smith, a two-time All-America and three-time All-CAA pick, led the nation in face-off percentage at 68.5. He also scored four goals and ranked No. 2 in NCAA Division I with 8.59 ground balls per game. Howard, a three-time All-CAA pick, had 56 points on 29 goals and 27 assists. He is expected to sit out the first part of the season due to a knee injury suffered in the fall.

Scherr, a second-year starter in goal, posted a school record 8.55 goals allowed average last season, and had a .570 save percentage. Biehl started 17 games in 2006 and collected 32 ground balls while anchoring a defense that allowed less than nine goals per game.
