Winter Faculty Institute kick-off event Jan. 8

2:39 p.m., Dec. 11, 2006--UD's 2007 Winter Faculty Institute kicks off Monday, Jan. 8. The event features two outstanding presentations about technology's potential to assist in curricular reform and student portfolios to enhance and deepen learning. The daylong event will be held in the Rodney Room of the Perkins Student Center.
Morning program
8:30 a.m.
Continental breakfast for participants
9 a.m.
Robert Lue, director of life sciences education and a dean and senior lecturer in molecular and cellular biology at Harvard University, will launch the institute with his keynote address on “Technology's Role in Curricular Transformation.” Lue will explore how technological innovation can be used as a means of changing both how and what is taught.
10 a.m.
UD faculty members will discuss practices and on-campus multimedia resources for learning, including an introduction to UD's New Student Multimedia Design Center:
- April Veness, associate professor of geography, visiting professor, University of San Carlos, Guatemala, and Sarah Archbald, UD graduate in liberal studies research, will discuss the "Role of Videography in Geographic Teaching, Research And Service: Observations Of An Accidental Advocate"; and
- Ralph Begleiter, distinguished journalist in residence, communication, will discuss “Going Hollywood: Student and Faculty Use Of Multimedia In Teaching And Learning.” He will explore how to catch the attention of image-focused students by incorporating made-to-order movies and animations in coursework, review the building blocks to good multimedia faculty presentations and offer ideas on how to encourage students to use UD's new Student Multimedia Design Center for their course assignments.

Lue will lead an interactive session on "How to Make Multimedia Development An Integral Part Of The Teaching Community." The session will explore methods for creating and sustaining a community of faculty and students focused on educational multimedia.

Noon-1:30 p.m.
Lunch and facilitated discussions led by experienced UD staff and faculty on uses for the new Student Multimedia Design Center, Personal Response Systems (PRS)--also called “clickers”--other interactive classroom tools, student engagement and emerging technologies.
Afternoon program

Provost Rich will highlight aspects of the recently announced Commitment to Delawareans.
2 p.m.
“Learning Portfolios: Reflective Practice for Improving Student Learning” will be presented by John Zubizarreta, professor of English, director of honors and faculty development, and former dean of undergraduate studies at Columbia College in South Carolina. The portfolio approach to gauging student learning is a compelling and widely diverse method of recording intellectual growth and, most importantly, of involving students in a critically reflective process that enriches and refines their educational experience. This session will both offer a foundation for the value of reflective practice in student learning and examine practical issues of developing, assessing and archiving portfolios.
