Five students named Donald W. Harward Fellows

1:30 p.m., Dec. 15, 2006--Five candidates for the Honors Degree with Distinction have been selected as the Donald W. Harward Fellows for 2007. The students, all seniors, are Emily Paolini, music; Andrew Seagraves, mechanical engineering; Laura Shankman, biology; Stephen Stolte, geography; and Alison VanBuskirk, English.

Their fellowships of $600 each will enable them to work full-time during Winter Session on their senior theses research and writing.

The Winter Session fellowships, which recognize Honors Degree candidates with outstanding academic records who are engaged in especially promising senior thesis research, are named in honor of Donald W. Harward, founder of the University Honors Program and former chairperson of UD's Department of Philosophy who retired in 2002 from the presidency of Bates College. Harward is now a senior adviser for the American Council on Education Fellows Program and a senior fellow with the American Association of American Colleges and Universities.
