Special Olympics event is held at UD’s ELC

Preschoolers Troy, left, and Alexander participate in the Special Olympics Young Athletes’ Day at UD’s Early Learning Center.

11:07 a.m., Dec. 13, 2006--Sixty students from the pre-school and kindergarten classes at UD's Early Learning Center competed Dec. 7 in the facility's gymnasium in the inaugural Special Olympics Young Athletes' Day, an event that is expected to take place annually.

Comprised of six stations that challenged students' motor coordination, speed, concentration and navigation skills, the arena of competition included an obstacle course, a cone slalom, parachute games and other activities. All students came out victorious and received a T-shirt and a medal.

“It was really neat to see how all the parents got involved with the kids,” Sharon Stull, associate director of the Early Learning Center, said. “Every child was a winner.”

Stull said that at least one parent for every child attended the event, and in many cases, both parents and grandparents were present.

The event was a culmination of the physical education program that Nancy Getchell, UD associate professor of health, nutrition and exercise sciences, conducts with preschoolers at the Early Learning Center. The coordination and organization of Friday's event involved UD undergraduates enrolled in Getchell's HESC 250 class, Jon Buzby, director of program innovations at Special Olympics Delaware, and Karen Rucker, director of the Early Learning Center.
