Students help with historic holiday exhibit

4:04 p.m., Dec. 15, 2006--When curator Deborah Kraak needed some skilled, helping hands to set up “All Dolled Up in Old Chester County,” an exhibition featuring antique dolls and 19th-century children's clothing and toys at the Chester County Historical Society, she called upon Belinda Orzada, associate professor of fashion and apparel studies, for help.

Four students from fashion and apparel studies--sophomore Alison Afflixio, freshman Camilla Berry, senior Heather Hansen and sophomore Lacey Lewandowski--volunteered their services. “The students' participation was key to getting the show pulled together,” Kraak said. “It was a big help for us and gave them a chance to use their hand skills, work with antique costumes and set up an exhibition.”

The students worked with children's clothing for boys and girls from the 1880s. Hansen helped cut out forms that were then padded and covered with muslin and used to display the clothing. Berry suggested using and helped wrap cartons as Christmas presents for a visitor-friendly barrier so that people could see but not touch the exhibit. Afflixio and Lewandowski helped arrange the clothing for the exhibition.

Graduate student Laura Johnson in the Winterthur Program in Early American Culture also assisted with the exhibition, setting up a replica of a mid-19th-century tabletop Christmas tree and dressing mannequins for the displays.

“All Dolled Up in Old Chester County” features 40 antique dolls, two large Victorian doll houses, Victorian parlor settings with costumed mannequins, children's clothing and other displays. The show is on view at the Chester County Historical Society, 225 North High St., West Chester, Pa.
