CAA volleyball: Hens picked to finish fifth

UD’s Kelly Gibson

8:48 a.m., Aug. 11, 2006--The University of Delaware volleyball team has been picked to finish fifth in the Colonial Athletic Association in a preseason poll of conference coaches.

Virginia Commonwealth University was favored to defend its CAA title, receiving seven first-place votes and 79 total points. Hofstra University was close behind with two first-place votes and 70 points, followed by Towson University with one first-place vote and 65 points.

The top three were followed by James Madison University (50 points), the Fightin' Blue Hens (44), Georgia State University (38), Northeastern University (37), the College of William & Mary (34), George Mason University (23) and the University of North Carolina Wilmington (10).

Earlier this week, UD Head Coach Bonnie Kenny welcomed back 13 returning players, including seven letter winners, for preseason drills. Leading the squad will be second team All-Colonial Athletic Association outside hitter Colleen Walsh and CAA All-Rookie selection Kelly Gibson.

Kenny enters her fifth season at UD and hopes to improve on last season's record of 11-20, which came on the heels of an outstanding 2004 season in which the Hens went 23-9 and reached the conference championship match.

The volleyball team will open the season at home, hosting the Delaware Invitational Aug. 25-26 at Barbara Viera Court in the Carpenter Sports Building. Guest teams participating in the tournament are the University of Texas Arlington, Seton Hall University and Marist College.
